ON World Launches 9th Edition Smart Home
Professional Installer Survey

One in two households in North America have at least one smart home product. While smart speakers are the most common, consumers are increasingly adopting other smart home systems such as video security, smart lighting, energy management, distributed audio and whole home automation.

Smart home users are likely to own multiple smart home products and long term users are just as likely as recent adopters to intend to purchase future products. ON World's recently completed survey with 500 smart home users found nearly two-thirds are "Very likely" to acquire new products in the next 12 months.

Over half (56%) purchased their first smart home product within the last 3 years and 11% within the last year. More than two-thirds (70%) own more than 5 and 20% own 15+ smart home products.

Growing Need for Whole Home Automation

Integration of smart home products is a growing concern. Integration of smart home products is a growing concern. While unifying smart home standards such as Matter are gaining momentum, there are still few certified products, and the complexity of whole home automation persists. This is reflected in our recent consumer surveys that found a higher preference for professional installation versus DIY solutions compared with two years ago.

Nearly all smart home lighting users integrate their smart lighting systems with other smart home products. Cameras and smart speakers are the most common integrations followed by security sensors, home theater, smart door locks, smart thermostats, distributed audio speakers, and smart plugs/outlets. Three-quarters have two or more other smart home product types that integrate with their smart lighting. Two in five respondents have three or more smart lighting integrations other than smart speakers.

9th Edition Smart Home Automation Survey

ON World’s Smart Home Automation survey asks key questions for homeowners, builders, smart home dealers, professional installers, manufacturers, platforms and service providers about the fastest growing markets as well as the most desired products, brands, features and technologies.

A few examples of the areas covered in the survey include:

• Fastest growing smart home product segments (lighting, energy, safety/security)

• Most popular smart home brands

• Most needed smart home features

• User requirements and application needs

• Adoption inhibitors, drivers and technology gaps

• Current trends compared with the pandemic years (2020-2021)

This research study was created with input from smart home market leaders including device manufacturers, software developers and home service providers. The first edition of this survey was conducted in 2007.

Home builders, service providers, dealers and professional installers of residential smart home products and services are invited to participate in ON World’s anonymous survey. The survey takes about 10 minutes to complete, and participants will receive a free report on the North America Home Automation Market as well as the survey results when completed.
