6.3 Million Outdoor Smart Wireless Lights by 2017
Installations for outdoor wireless lighting will quadruple between 2013 and 2017 due to the migration to LEDs, improving energy tariffs and increasing participation by municipalities, according to a recently published report by ON World.
San Diego, CA, December 4, 2013— Outdoor wireless lighting for municipalities and commercial properties is one of the fastest growing market segments for smart lighting, according to global technology research firm ON World.
“Municipalities are key green initiative participants and smart lighting is often the first step toward city-wide energy and operational savings,” said Mareca Hatler, ON World’s research director. “Outdoor smart lighting is increasingly becoming a launching pad for future Smart City applications such as public safety, traffic controls and parking management.”
After years of development, large-scale rollouts of wireless streetlight monitoring is underway with the United Kingdom leading the way. Market drivers include the migration to LEDs, improving energy tariffs and actions by local governments to develop specifications and guidelines for more advanced lighting controls. In addition, demand is growing for a variety of commercial outdoor wireless lighting applications such as parking garages/lots, campuses, auto dealership lots and open air marketplaces.
Smart City applications are benefiting from years of Smart Grid investment and the development of standards based wireless mesh technologies such as ZigBee, IEEE 802.15.4g and 6LoWPAN. This is illustrated by new entrants such as GE, Silver Spring Networks and Paradox Engineering that provide wireless mesh outdoor lighting systems based on Smart Grid standards.
However, some of the largest initial deployments for municipal wireless streetlight monitoring by vendors Telensa and Harvard Engineering feature long range non-802.15.4 wireless communications. In order to overcome the diversity of outdoor lighting networks, the TALQ Consortium has developed a standard management software interface protocol that provides interoperability at the application layer.
Illuminating Concepts, Paradox, Sensity Systems and others are extending their outdoor lighting wireless networks by integrating applications such as video, audio, public safety, traffic controls and parking management. In addition to the vendors mentioned above, other outdoor wireless smart lighting vendors include Acuity, CIMCON, Dailight, Lumewave, Mayflower, Mesh Systems, Ripley Lighting Controls, Schreder, Sunrise, TwistHDM and Virticus.
By 2017, 6.3 million outdoor wireless smart lights will be installed worldwide, an increase of nearly 400% from this year.
