2 in 5 Industrial WSN Users Rank Internet of Things |
Two in five industrial wireless sensor network (WSN) users rank Internet of Things (IoT) platforms and cloud-based systems as “Important” or “Most Important” strategic investment areas in a recently completed survey by ON World. San Diego, CA January 28, 2015— Adoption of wireless sensing and control solutions is accelerating the growth of Internet-connected devices for industrial automation, according to global technology research firm ON World. “Wireless sensor network technologies have enabled cutting edge sensing and control solutions from the plant to remote oil and gas well sites,” says Mareca Hatler, ON World’s research director. “As early adopters, industrial companies have been instrumental in driving the next generation of Internet of Things innovations.” In collaboration with the International Society of Automation (ISA), ON World has completed an extensive survey on industrial wireless sensor networking with 220 industrial automation vendors, end users, systems integrators and industry experts worldwide. This survey is compared with a previous survey completed in 2012 in collaboration with ISA, HCF and WINA. ON World’s survey found that WSN users rank cloud-based systems (42%) and Internet of Things platforms (37%) as “Important” or “Most important” strategic investment areas. IP addressable wireless sensors are a growing trend with 54% indicating that IP addressable sensors are “important” or “Most important” compared with 45% two years ago. Moreover, 39% believe that industrial Internet of Things will be ubiquitous within the next four years. The survey also found that 8 in 10 respondents believe that wearable technologies such as smart watches, smart glasses, smart clothing and personal safety monitors will be used by their industrial organization in the next five years. By 2018, wireless sensor networks will expand the total market for industrial field instruments by over 20% and 1 in 3 of the device shipments will be wireless at this time. ON World’s Smart Industries Wireless Sensor Networks Set includes three recently published reports covering the global market for industrial wireless sensor networking: Industrial Wireless Sensor Networks, Digital Oilfield Wireless Sensor Networks and Industrial WSN Global Survey.
