By 2018, 1 in 3 Industrial Sensors Will Be Wireless |
ON World’s recently published report covers the global market for industrial wireless sensor networking (WSN) in 14 market segments and analyzes the whole value chain including WSN components, systems, software and platforms. San Diego, CA November 12, 2014— Industrial wireless sensor networks are are creating new markets and providing growing opportunities for cloud-connected smart objects, according to a recently completed report by global technology research firm, ON World. “The industrial wireless sensor networking value proposition has evolved from simply extending or replacing wired networks to providing cloud-connected smart object intelligence,” says Mareca Hatler, ON World’s research director. In collaboration with the International Society of Automation (ISA), ON World has completed an extensive survey on industrial wireless sensor networking with 220 industrial automation vendors, end users, systems integrators and industry experts worldwide. This survey shows distinct differences with ON World’s 2012 survey which was a collaboration with ISA, HART Communication Foundation (HCF) and the Wireless Industrial Networking Alliance (WINA). Some of the survey’s key findings are that 15% more WSN users are interested in IP addressable wireless sensors compared with two years ago. Also, security is growing as a concern with 59% saying this is a WSN adoption inhibitor compared with 50% in 2012. ON World’s survey found that network integration, wireless sensor networking and mobile app development are the top three most important strategic investment areas. The survey also found that 8 in 10 respondents believe that wearable technologies such as smart watches, smart glasses, smart clothing and personal safety monitors will be used by their industrial organization in the next five years. By 2018, wireless sensor networks will expand the total market for industrial field instruments by over 20% and 1 in 3 of the device shipments will be wireless at this time. ON World’s recently published report, Industrial Wireless Sensor Networks, covers the global market for industrial WSNs including 5-year forecasts for WSN systems and services in six application areas across 14 market segments within process automation, factory automation and vertical/hybrid industries. The report, ON World’s fifth edition, also includes in-depth analysis of 50+ companies and covers all major WSN technologies including 802.15.4, WiFi, long range wireless point-to-multipoint and IP smart objects.
