Synopsis:

As a core technology for the burgeoning Internet of Things, IEEE 802.15.4 is the leading technology for short range, fixed wireless sensing and control markets. Despite intensifying competition from WiFi and Bluetooth, 802.15.4 unit sales will double this year from 2014 with growth increasing in key markets such as smart homes, buildings and cities.

Since our first report on ZigBee and 802.15.4 over ten years ago, ON World has interviewed and surveyed thousands of vendors, suppliers, service providers and end users involved with wireless sensor networking. Our latest survey conducted in April 2016 with 100 developers found that IEEE 802.15.4 is used by 63% for a variety of IoT applications.

IEEE 802.15.4 is used in popular smart home products and services such as Nest’s smart thermostats and smoke detectors; Comcast’s Xfinity Home; as well as smart LED light bulbs by Philips, OSRAM, GE and Cree. It is also growing for smart lighting and energy management in buildings, industrial automation, streetlight monitoring and public safety as well as for advanced traffic and parking solutions.

ZigBee PRO continues to have the largest share of the 802.15.4 market, making up nearly half of the units shipped this year. However, devices using 6LoWPAN including Thread, Wi-SUN, JupiterMesh, ISA100.11a others will increase faster.
