Synopsis:

Wireless sensor networks (WSN) will be responsible for the majority of the growth in intelligent building systems over the next decade.

A transformation is underway in building automation due to low-cost Internet based cloud services enabled by wireless sensor networks. From building-wide wireless mesh networks to room-level controls, there are dozens of new entrants that are challenging the incumbents especially for small and medium sized buildings.

Self-powered wireless sensors that use harvested energy have eliminated one of the challenges for deploying WSNs: Avoiding the labor cost and environmental waste of replacing batteries.

Over the next five years, WSN revenues from smaller buildings will increase 60% faster than larger buildings. In 2017, global WSN revenues from buildings under 50,000 square feet will reach $1.3 billion up from $127 million in 2012.

ON World's recent survey of 85 professional installers found that 80% are targeting commercial buildings. For these professionals, over half have wireless sensor network deployments and twenty-four percent have deployed WSNs with >100 nodes.

For this report, ON World analyzed more than 100 companies including 77 device manufacturers and/or software platform providers that currently offer smart building WSN products and 23 chipset, module and network stack licensors.

In 2017, wireless HVAC and lighting controls will make up 71% of the WSN smart building WSN unit shipments and over 60% of the revenues.
