Synopsis:

Energy directives, rising operating costs and a growing green movement are driving adoption of Wireless Sensor Networking (WSN) for building automation.  While previous WSN products have left a fragmented market, a cross industry effort is underway to unify sensor networks with an IP based platform that will simplify development, attract new entrants, and encourage innovation.

WSN is disruptive with up to 80% reduction in installation costs and support for a wide range of applications not possible with wires that make buildings greener and “smarter.”  With the prospect of installing sensors almost anywhere, buildings-- large and small-- can optimize their energy consumption, improve safety and security, and reduce operating expenses.

ON World’s survey with 76 facility managers and IT directors found that 21% are current wireless sensor users and 32% are planning to implement WSN solutions within 18 months.

Report Overview:

This report covers the growing market opportunities for Wireless Sensor Networking (WSN) in building automation and control including the following:

Market Forces: Identification of the largest and fasting growing WSN markets in eight target markets and seven solution areas including HVAC, Lighting, Security, Metering, Environmental mtrg, Condition mtrg, and Guest controls.

Forecasts: Five year market size forecasts by unit, revenue, solution, target market, technology and by geography

End User Perspectives: An in-depth survey with 76 facility managers, IT directors, property managers and owners who are responsible for the optimal functioning and energy management of their buildings.

Technology Evaluation: Comprehensive technology evaluation on the standards situation, potentially disruptive technologies, and technology requirements for WSN technologies such as ZigBee, 802.15.4, Low Power WiFi, and EnOcean

Software simulations: Application simulations using ON World's software tool on the performance, battery lifetime, and potential interference from WSN in four separate applications such as temperature sensing, motion detection, and large scale data centers.

Value System: Segmentation, disruption versus sustainability analysis, and profiles on 75 companies including platform providers, software developers, manufacturers, and component suppliers

ON World has been covering Wireless Sensor Networking since 2002 and this is our 23rd report on related areas.
