FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

The Smart Energy Home Market
to Reach $3 Billion in 2014

San Diego, CA , Oct. 20, 2010— The smart energy home is emerging as a highly investable ecosystem with hundreds of developers and billions of dollars of funding, according to a recently published report by ON World.

“Energy is the killer app for the smart home,” says Mareca Hatler, ON World’s research director. “The Home Area Network (HAN) has become one of the most exciting developer opportunities in the last few years. Smart grid initiatives have seeded this market and primed the HAN ecosystem for hyper-growth.”

ON World’s research with 600 early adopters in five continents investigates consumer attitudes about energy savings, green homes, the most likely energy products and services, pricing, preferred interaction devices, user vs utility control, automation, smart meters, real-time energy data, and more.

A few of the survey’s findings include the following:

  • 59% are "Interested" or "Most interested" in adopting new technologies for home energy management
  • 81% are willing to pay for energy management equipment if they could achieve up to 30% energy savings.
  • Respondents are willing to pay an average of $150 on home energy equipment with key differences among consumers in the U.S., UK, and Australia.
In 2014, global revenues for energy related HAN products and services could reach $3.3 billion.

ON World’s report “Smart Energy Homes” covers the global market for home energy management including 5-year forecasts by region, household, application, and product type from a moderate and aggressive viewpoint; a consumer survey; in-depth competitive analysis; and technology evaluation.

The Home Energy Hub
A recent trend is for companies to offer a centralized home energy hub that provides automation and control of in-home energy consuming devices as well as integration with cloud based services. Cisco/OpenPeak, Ecobee, EnergyHub, and GE/Advanced Telemetry offer touch screen in-home displays with rich graphics to provide energy consumption awareness as well as supporting a variety of home controls. Home energy IP gateways by Belkin, D-Link, GE, Jetlun, Rainforest Automation, and Tendril provide centralized home energy management using existing user interfaces (e.g. PCs and mobile phones).

Cloud Services
To make energy solutions affordable for the mass market, another group of innovators are emerging such as AlertMe, iControl, EcoFactor, and Intamac Systems that provide cloud based platforms that allow home energy service providers to subsidize low cost hardware with a monthly service fee.

ADT is currently rolling out its home security monitoring and interactive control service based on iControl’s platform. Comcast and Verizon are planning to launch their home energy management services by the end of the year. British Telecom also provides a home control service that includes energy management, enabled by Intamac Systems. Recently, Alertme announced it has become a strategic partner and cloud service provider to British Gas that plans to deploy smart meters and in-home energy management systems for all of its customers.

Peak Load Innovators
In the U.S., utility HAN pilots are underway in nearly every state and advanced energy saving programs are being developed by the majority of utilities and energy retailers across the country. Comverge, Consert, GridPoint, Sequentric and Tendril provide consumer centered demand response solutions such as automated energy savings, conservation, and dynamic pricing.

The success of this market is dependent upon advanced Home Area Network (HAN) technologies, standards, as well as collaboration among utilities, regulators, AMI vendors, device manufacturers, and home energy service providers.
